A quick read of the site amazes. The inmates are still banging away at Obama’s birthplace? His religion? They’re attacking his sexuality? Yes, absolutely. There is nothing too unhinged to really draw out and linger upon, usually accompanied with the helpless flailing of arms and the hot eye-crapping of tears. The desperation is uni-omni and palpable. My God. Is there just no way out of Satan’s ass?

On any assumption of goodwill toward America and its institutions, Obama’s policies appear incoherent, disjointed, incompetent, and self-destructive. On the assumption of hostility toward America’s vital interests and its way of life, however, they resolve into the rational, coherent, and indeed directly linear pursuit of its destruction.

Then I compose a spirited synopsis and post it on my site. While it may look AS IF you had written it, the readers are aware that I have not in fact quoted you. Quoting the bloggers of Renew America is really not very funny. It is traditionally appalling. In the rare instance where I do quote somebody in a ‘Shorter,’ I make it clear. Like:

After winning in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado, Rick Santorum has gotten a big boost in national popularity. Public Policy Polling has Rick over Mitt, 38%/23%. Pew Research has the split at 30%/28%. Either way, the race has been turned upside down. The shoo-in candidate now trails the Keystone Godbotherer no matter how you look at it. Triple P also shows Santorum up in the swing state of Michigan.

If you’re Mitt Romney, what do you do now?

“I was a severely conservative Republican governor,” Romney told the [CPAC] audience of his time in office, pointing out his support of traditional marriage and abstinence education.

You run wildly rightward. You try to cut Santorum off at the lunatic pass. You get ugly.

Jeff Hullinger: [Lawmakers] have bantered about the proposition that welfare recipients should be drug tested. How do you feel about that?

Mitt Romney: Well my own view is, it’s a great idea. People who are receiving welfare benefits, government benefits, we should make sure they’re not using those benefits to pay for drugs. I think it’s an excellent idea.

Drug testing isn’t just stupid, insulting and un-American, it’s unconstitutional. But Mitt thinks he desperately needs to look XXX-Conservative, so we get his pandering like this. I suppose we’re in for plenty more of this shameless behavior.

I see a big problem with this strategy. Mitt assumes he’s increasingly unpopular because he’s failing the right-wing acid test. He thinks the voters are turning to the likes of Gingrich and Santorum because they’re red-meat pitching extremists. He’s missing the bigger truth: people are running away from him because they don’t trust him. He’s as spineless and calculating a politician as we’ve recently seen, willing to say or do anything to get elected.

He didn’t have to be caught in this bind. Mitt could have staked out a position as a moderate conservative and be leading the race. All he had to do was commit to the strategy. He could’ve drawn a ‘Romney’ line in the sand and told the voters “This is who I am: A sensible conservative, unwavering in my positions, substantially in harmony with right-wing politics, but also rejecting of divisive extremism. Take it or leave it.” That message would have outlasted all the chaos and crazy candidates of this season. It also would have united the moderates and purists at the end of the primary war. It would have put him in a position to win the presidency, and that’s what conservatives really want, after everything is said and done.

But it’s far too late for that, isn’t it? Mitt’s decided he’s going to run to the right to try to steal Santorum’s thunder, then run back to the center in the general election. This is exactly the behavior that got people to despise him in the first place. Polling shows that the coveted centrists and independents, the voters that get candidates elected, are turned off by Romney because of this soullessness. Now Mitt’s decided his campaign requires even more of it. Good luck with that.

David Mamet releases his latest book, ‘The Secret Knowledge: On the Dismantling of American Culture.’ Christopher Hitchens reviews it for the New York Times:

This is an extraordinarily irritating book, written by one of those people who smugly believe that, having lost their faith, they must ipso facto have found their reason.

Mamet has gone wingnut, apparently, and this book debuts his new perspective. Those alone — Mamet and his new ideas — might be worth the price of a hardcover, but Hitchens suggests you forget it. Mamet has only become Conservative in the shallow, talk radio way, and ‘American Culture’ is full of the evidence:

In order to be persuaded by it, you would have to be open to propositions like this:

“Part of the left’s savage animus against Sarah Palin is attributable to her status not as a woman, neither as a Conservative, but as a Worker.”

Or this:

“America is a Christian country. Its Constitution is the distillation of the wisdom and experience of Christian men, in a tradition whose codification is the Bible.”

Hitchens passes on Mamet’s Limbaugh-esque cliches as if they were inexhaustible:

On one page affirmative action is described as being “as injust as chattel slavery”; on another as being comparable to the Japanese internment and the Dred Scott decision. We learn that 1973 was the year the United States “won” the Vietnam War, and that Karl Marx — who on the evidence was somewhat more industrious than Sarah Palin — “never worked a day in his life.”

I don’t recall affirmative action killing anyone by the tens of thousands. Nor do I remember any watershed Vietnam victory in 1973. Instead of the brilliant playwright gaining any fresh insight or synthesizing some bold, cutting-edge political philosophy, Mamet breaks out in another surprising direction: He tanks. David brushes off the minimal brain-work necessary to remain attached to political realities:

He recently told The Weekly Standard that he does not read political magazines and blogs; that his main interface with the modern conservative movement is talk radio. “I drive around and listen to the talk-show guys,” he said. “Beck, Prager, Hugh Hewitt, Michael Medved.”

We know who the Medveds and Pragers of the world are, and they can’t be taken seriously. They don’t make sense. They can’t cut it in rational discourse: they are mystifying, over-wrought and obtuse. Their spectacular rhetorical failures of common sense and decency provide comical fodder for many, many blogs more entertaining than mine. But these are the people and the ideas David Mamet listens to. And now, it shows.

Whack through The Secret Knowledge’s abundant quotations of Friedrich Hayek and you’ll find all the shock jock’s canards: “Carbon emissions do not in any way affect the temperature of the planet”; we “won in Vietnam”; an Islamic center in downtown Manhattan is “a cultural obscenity”; FDR “elaborated a bad economic downturn into the worst depression in history”; the “erosion of marriage”—pinned to sex education, homosexuality, and abortion—is “a moral affront.” These are not points that Mamet sets out to prove, mind you. Had this been the case, he may have written an interesting book. Instead, he accepts them at face value, packs them into his shotgun, and blasts away at liberalism’s sitting ducks: Jane Fonda, Al Sharpton, Noam Chomsky.

If David Mamet, in 2011, is aiming at Jane Fonda, he’s not to be taken seriously. And that’s sad.

This reminds me, pop culture figure-wise, of other political collapses. Dennis Miller used to be funny. His stand-up free associations, filled with absurdities and brain-bending arcana, were fun. After Chevy Chase, Dennis, dry and deadpan, was probably the only person to do SNL’s Weekend Update justice.

But after 9/11 Dennis became very angry and Conservative. That landed him a weekly gig on Bill O’Reilly’s show, where he delighted in lazy, right-wing cheap shots, especially at Nancy Pelosi: Miller compares Pelosi to WWE — “Both have loud obnoxious women with increasing power whose faces scare little children,” Miller attacks Pelosi for having a “sub-reptilian intellect” — likens her face to a “lizard laying on a hot rock,” Miller calls Pelosi a “shrieking harridan magpie.”

He also became un-funny. When Fox launched a disastrous comedy show, the Half Hour News Hour, Miller was its pillar. Given free reign to stand before the cameras and riff as he pleased, Dennis was brutal:

Another painful tanking I recall: David Zucker. He was one of the skit comedy absurdists behind Kentucky Fried Movie, Airplane! and the Police Squad series. At some point, David went right-wing, turning clumsy and rigid.

He started releasing political ads “skewering” Democrats (here, here). His new attitude also generated a feature-length movie, “An American Carol.” Meant thoroughly and comically to debase Michael Moore, it proved that Zucker stunk:

Among Rotten Tomatoes’ Top Critics, which consists of popular and notable critics from the top newspapers, websites, television and radio programs, the film holds an overall approval rating of 0%.

Costing $20 million, it earned $7 million. David figured out why: “Zucker laments that the audience for this type of film is the type that waits for it to be available on DVD.”

Love this stuff. It’s indoctrination, pure and simple.

Tea party group offers summer camp

TAMPA — . . the [Tampa 912 Project], which falls under the tea party umbrella, hopes to introduce kids ages 8 to 12 to principles that include “America is good,” “I believe in God,” and “I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.”

God shed his grace on me. And crown my good with eff you.

Children will win hard, wrapped candies to use as currency for a store, symbolizing the gold standard. On the second day, the “banker” will issue paper money instead. Over time, students will realize their paper money buys less and less, while the candies retain their value.

Until the kids start sucking on the ingots. But fear not. They’ll soon be tinkling gold. Beats the hell out of the parents — they’ve been sucking unproductively all their lives.

Another example: Starting in an austere room where they are made to sit quietly, symbolizing Europe, the children will pass through an obstacle course to arrive at a brightly decorated party room (the New World).

That Versailles was pretty drab, wasn’t it?

Red-white-and-blue confetti will be thrown. But afterward the kids will have to clean up the confetti, learning that with freedom comes responsibility.
